Understanding Gemstone Clarity

Natural gemstones are formed deep within the Earth under intense geological conditions, often developing unique internal characteristics known as inclusions—tiny mineral crystals or cavities that become trapped during their formation. These inclusions play a crucial role in determining a gemstone’s clarity, which, along with Color, Cut, and Carat (weight), forms the Four Cs of gemstone grading.

At Ceylon Gem Co., we assess gemstone clarity using the internationally recognized Gemological Institute of America (GIA) clarity scale:

Clarity Grade	Description
IF (Internally Flawless)	No inclusions visible under 10x magnification, though surface blemishes may be present.
VVS (Very, Very Slight Inclusions) / Eye Clean	Contains tiny inclusions visible only under magnification; appears flawless to the naked eye.
VS (Very Slight Inclusions)	Minor inclusions visible to a trained eye under close inspection but do not affect the gemstone’s beauty.
SI (Slightly Included)	Noticeable inclusions visible to the naked eye.
I (Included)	Inclusions are easily visible without magnification.

We strive to offer complete transparency when showcasing our gemstones. Our product images and videos are captured using a 10x macro lens, revealing intricate details that may not be visible to the naked eye.
